International Women's Day Reflection: Take Back Your Body ( And Mindset)

In the background is the Big Brother Nigeria show which is going on at the point of publishing this post. One of the male participants - referred to as housemates- ostensibly in an alcohol-induced moment of daring, looked around to ensure there were no cameras (or people) in sight, and groped a sleeping female housemate under the covers. Unfortunately for him, he overlooked two important issues; one, the live eviction show was the next day, and two, there  are  cameras everywhere. The cameras and Big Brother caught him; which was serendipitous for the female housemate- let's call her B- as she was totally unaware of what was going on.  Long story short, Big Brother called both of them privately and informed them on what had been seen. Then in public, disqualified the male housemate and evicted him from the house. You can read more  here . How Can I Love My Neighbour

Every time I sign into yahoo messenger these days, there seems to be one story or the other about a family that had been slaughtered by their breadwinner. Almost everyday. The specifics are different, but the scenario is the same: owing to the recession, the man of the house finds himself in debt and penury, and sees death as the only way out. A few years ago, I probably would have seen the man as wicked and evil. If you want to kill yourself do so, but why take young innocent lives with you? I shudder to imagine the terror in the minds of the kids when they saw their protector, their infallible parent, attempting to harm them greviously, over and over again (in the most recent one the father was said to have stabbed all the members of his family before he shot them, probably because the stab wounds did not do the trick), their last thoughts. Independence Matters

Wazzap, I promised you two stories emanating from this weekend so here goes the second. I was in a supermarket on Saturday ,to do a bit of shopping for cosmetics, when I ran into an old boss of mine . At that meeting, he seemed quite happy to see me and even offered to pay for my purchases. Then the usual questions emerged: where are you now/ what do you do now? I was so happy to hand him my business card, as my present job is a departure from where I used to be. I could see that his respect grew when I told him what it was I did, and what kind of car I drive now- although, my darlings, I embellished the story a bit. He then suggested we went for a drink, and we did. As we had our drinks I tried to catch up on the news in his office, my former office.
